As war loomed, fashion clung to the idea of la vie en rose. In its March 1, 1939, issue, Vogue reported from the Paris Openings that designers offered “a new breath of life—The Air of Innocence.” Fresh indeed was the cover painted by expatriate Illinoisan artist Carl “Eric” Erickson of “Agnès’ vernal hat—a lawn of clipped green tulle planted with flowers and called, with a bow toward America, ‘Prairie.’”
